John has dedicated his 40+year career to the design of innovative healthcare facilities. He grew up in Rochester, Minnesota, the son of a Mayo Clinic surgeon, and now is responsible for the Mayo-Ellerbe Becket relationship as well as staff development and design direction.
He has combined a background in medicine with a career-long series of significant architectural, medical planning, and master planning projects for leading medical institutions. John’s outstanding conceptual abilities, his medical experience and his studies in urban design all converge in his solutions to these extremely complex environments. For him, the essence of good healthcare design is when planning and design come together to make the building function well, not just the first few years, but for 100 years or more through provision of an adaptable infrastructure.
