Ellerbe Becket To Renovate Historic Athletic Complex at Hotchkiss School

April 14th, 1999

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ellerbe Becket will renovate the Monahan Athletic Complex at the prestigious Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn. The facelift for the 60-year-old complex includes new swimming and ice hockey facilities as well as expansions to accommodate the school’s boys’ and girls’ athletic programs.

Ellerbe Becket’s Washington, D.C., office will provide architectural and engineering services for a feasibility study, program and concept design. Schematic design, design development and construction documents will be completed in early 2000. Ellerbe Becket will work in conjunction with Counsilman/Hunsaker & Associates.

The total project cost is estimated to be US $25 million, which includes a construction cost of US $18 million. The project is scheduled to be completed by spring 2002.

The Monahan Athletic Complex was constructed in the 1930s, and additions were made in the 1950s. The complex plays host to a full complement of boys’ and girls’ sports (football, soccer, field hockey, cross country, squash, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, hockey and swimming). Modernization and additions are to include:

  • New natatorium with 25-meter pool and diving well
  • Second hockey rink (Olympic size) in addition to the existing Schmidt Hockey Rink
  • New field house with three basketball courts and a suspended running track
  • Four new indoor tennis courts and four new squash courts
  • New locker room buildings
  • New entry road, gate and parking

Hotchkiss was looking for a nationally recognized firm with extensive experience in collegiate sports facility design, said Ellerbe Becket Principal David Dymecki. “The project’s most exciting aspect is to balance the new athletic campus community with the academic campus community, in support of the school’s mission to build both the body and the mind,” he said.

Ellerbe Becket is a global leader in design, engineering and the construction industry with 12 offices worldwide. The firm is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 1999. Ellerbe Becket currently is ranked the country’s second largest architecture and engineering firm by Building Design & Construction.
