Kingdome Implosion Makes Way for New Stadium

March 26th, 2000

WHAT: Seattle Kingdome Implosion

WHEN: 8:30 a.m., Sunday, March 26

WHERE: Downtown Seattle, Wash.

ACTIVITIES:
The largest concrete domed structure in the world will fall to the ground March 26. The implosion will take place in two phases, bringing down the structure in less than 20 seconds. The dome will collapse inward in six sections, leaving debris at the center and the perimeter.

HISTORY:
The end of the Kingdome marks the beginning of a new era for Seattle football and soccer fans. The implosion of the Kingdome will make way for the new Washington State Football/Soccer Stadium and Exhibition Center, created by renowned design firm Ellerbe Becket. Stadium construction has already begun and will accelerate following the Kingdome demolition. It is expected to be complete in 2002.

The new facility features 67,000 seats, 7,000 club seats, 71 upper-level suites; and 12 field-level endzone suites that will offer a breathtaking view of the game action. It is the only football stadium which connects with a 325,000-square foot exhibition center. The exhibition center can host pre- and post-game events as well as the NFL experience.

An innovator in stadium design, Ellerbe Becket designed the retractable roof Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Turner Field in Atlanta and the retro-themed Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The firm also has completed historic renovations of Notre Dame Football Stadium in South Bend, Ind., and Madison Square Garden in New York City.
