BALTIMORE — The Cordish Company announced today the selection of Ellerbe Becket as the lead architect firm for the 107-acre (43.3-ha) entertainment development, The Power Plant of Hampton Roads, located at Interstate 64 and Mercury Blvd in Hampton, Va.
Ellerbe Becket, founded in 1909, provides integrated architecture, engineering and construction services worldwide. The 1999 Building Design & Construction survey ranked the firm as the third largest architecture and engineering firm in the United States. “What’s important to our customers today, is not necessarily that we’ve been in business for 90 years, but that we leverage our knowledge and technology base to their best advantage,” said Bob Degenhardt, PE, CEO of Ellerbe Becket. “We are innovative and creative problem solvers, which is why we are the perfect complement to the development team for The Power Plant of Hampton Roads,” stated Degenhardt.
“I believe in Ellerbe Becket’s ability to work fundamentally within the diverse and talented development team that has been assembled for The Power Plant of Hampton Roads project,” stated Kathy Grook, Retail Development Manager, city of Hampton. Ellerbe Becket is committed to creating a sense of place. The skill, knowledge and craft they apply to all aspects of design — from initial ideas through the final built environment — produces the exceptional design qualities as seen in all of their projects. “Ellerbe Becket has no fear of exploring and discovering new ideas,” said Reed Cordish, vice president of The Cordish Company. “They have a commitment to design excellence, as their projects all across the world will attest. The Power Plant name is a brand that equates with development excellence, and Ellerbe Becket has the abilities and talent to bring this great concept to an even higher level.”
Notable projects designed by Ellerbe Becket include the 1996 Olympic Stadium and conversion to a new ballpark for the Atlanta Braves (with the Atlanta Stadium Design Team); design of Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Ariz., the first retractable roof stadium in the United States; and the design and construction of facades emulating Hollywood Boulevard, New York City, and the San Francisco waterfront for Universal Studios theme park in Orlando, Fla.
