John L. Waugh named Fellow of the American Institute of Architects

April 2nd, 2010

John L. Waugh, FAIA

Minneapolis, Minn. – John L. Waugh, planning and design principal of Ellerbe Becket, an AECOM Company, is one of 134 individuals elevated in 2010 to the American Institute of Architects’ prestigious College of Fellows.

An architect who dedicated his career to the complexities of health care planning, architecture and project delivery methods, Waugh is internationally recognized for the advancement of this challenging building type. John has led, either as principal in charge, or planning/design principal, more than 70 healthcare projects totaling over 17 million square feet – including six that are larger than one million square feet, and two in excess of two million square feet.

A native of Rochester, Minnesota, Waugh has served as Mayo Clinic’s master planner and principal architect for over 25 years, providing the physical framework that supported the substantial growth of this storied health care institution. With a background that combines urban design and studies in medicine, Waugh considers a medical facility similar to a small city. Using urban planning concepts, he works with his clients and teams to develop strategies for medical facility growth, change and renewal. He is always thinking long term.

In the late 1970s, Waugh pioneered the design of highly flexible and adaptable health care facilities. These concepts were first applied to the planning of the replacement hospital at the University of Minnesota, and have subsequently been implemented on projects such as the Mayo Clinic Gonda Building in Rochester, Minn., Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, University Hospital in Dubai and The Methodist Hospital North Campus Expansion in Houston.

Currently in his 34th year with the firm—one third of Ellerbe Becket’s 100-year history—John’s work style fosters collaboration, innovation, creativity, and intellectual exploration among his teams and with his clients. Says Rick Lincicome, AIA, Senior Vice President of Ellerbe Becket, “This is a well deserved recognition for John's decades-long commitment to enhancing health care environments and care delivery on a global basis.”

The Fellowship program was developed to elevate those architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Election to fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of architects as individuals, but also their significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level.

The investiture will take place in June as part of the 2010 AIA Convention in Miami.
