Ellerbe Becket Professionals Cited in Article on Trends in Nursing Station Design

May 27th, 2009

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Two Ellerbe Becket healthcare professionals, interior designer Karen Mensing and research associate Lou Bunker-Hellmich, PhD, were interviewed for an article on trends in nursing station design, “Complex Care: A Focus on Nursing Stations,” published on Contract online.

The article focused on this question: “How can nurses’ station design be maximized to improve not only the delivery of care and the experience of the patients themselves, but also to better the working life of healthcare practioners?” Mensing and Bunker-Hellmich were able to cite examples from design and research projects that discussed trends in various workplace models for nursing staff.

Of note is a research study completed by Ellerbe Becket in collaboration with Knoll, evaluating centralized versus decentralized nursing stations and the impact of each on nurses’ psychosocial health and work behaviors, and to develop design recommendations to improve those spaces. This project begins to tackle a relatively unexplored area of research and this study helps provide a starting point for thinking about how to improve these extremely important spaces.
