WASHINGTON, D.C. – Gregory Y. Chang, AIA, has been named Ellerbe Becket’s National Director of Healthcare. The company is one of the oldest and largest global design firms.
He succeeds Jon Buggy, AIA, who is focusing full-time on managing the firm’s Minneapolis office. Chang is based in Ellerbe Becket’s Washington, D.C., office where he has worked for the past 10 years as a Principal and Director of Planning.
“In addition to his medical planning experience, Greg also brings special personal skills to his new position,” said Ellerbe Becket CEO Rick Lincicome. “He is a strong communicator and engages the client in lively and productive dialogue. He is a terrific listener, is flexible in his approach and is always willing to consider a new alternative.”
Since designing the first Mayo Clinic in 1912, Ellerbe Becket has been a pioneer in the field of healthcare design. The firm has completed new facilities and renovations for hundreds of hospitals, academic medical centers and medical group practice clinics around the world, each reflecting the unique facility and business needs of the client.
“We create healing environments that seek to inspire and improve the human condition,” said Chang. “Clients tell us that our design process is different from that of other firms. Our collaborative approach enables the user to truly engage in the practice. This helps to establish the certainty of outcome. Ellerbe Becket fully integrates the design and planning to function as one.”
In recent years Ellerbe Becket has become the leading healthcare designer in the Middle East. Chang is a key team member on one of Ellerbe Becket’s largest projects in that region, the new University Hospital in Dubai Healthcare City. Other current projects include Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, Md.; and the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, Cancer Institute, in Oklahoma City, Okla.
“Because of our unique culture of innovation, Ellerbe Becket has designed many industry ‘firsts’ that set the standard for today’s healthcare facilities,” said Chang. For example, the firm has designed a variety of inpatient nursing unit configurations that serve as the industry benchmark. And earlier this decade, the firm developed the “Patient Room of the Future” concept, which has become a reality at St. Rita’s Hospital in Lima, Ohio, and is being implemented in other client hospitals.
Chang plans to further diversify Ellerbe Becket’s healthcare expertise by:- Promoting the firm’s strategic and operational planning capabilities
- Incorporating sustainability into every aspect of the practice
- Continuing to develop the firm’s international practice
- Pursuing more academic medical center projects
He holds two degrees from Catholic University of America, a bachelor of science in architecture and a bachelor of architecture. He also is a member of the American Institute of Architects.
An innovator since its founding in 1909, Ellerbe Becket is a leader in architecture, engineering, interiors and construction services with office locations worldwide.
