Practice Makes Perfect: West Virginia University Moves Forward On Practice Facility

February 27th, 2008

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – One of the fastest growing segments of the sports design world is in the area of athletic training and practice facilities. A new basketball practice facility at West Virginia University in Morgantown will set the standard, incorporating the best components of training facilities from collegiate and professional sports organizations around the country.

The new facility, scheduled for completion in August 2009, will include two full practice courts and four 3-point courts with ample run-off space on the end lines and sidelines. The entire facility will integrate a state of the art coaching video system allowing video to be accessed at any time or place within the structure.

The new facility will house both the West Virginia men’s and women’s basketball teams, and will include Hall of Fame exhibition spaces to showcase the history and tradition of Mountaineers basketball. With a site as picturesque and dramatic as nearby Fallingwater, the project will combine a palette of concrete, stone and glass to capture the stunning views while clearly identifying the structure as uniquely Mountaineer.

For the Mountaineers, designer Ellerbe Becket will build upon trends and innovations incorporated into the recently-completed practice facility for the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers. “Distinctive, well-planned training and practice facilities reflect the unique qualities of not only the athletics programs, but the institution themselves,” said Ellerbe Becket Design Director Jon Niemuth, AIA. “Not just for practice, these facilities afford athletes and coaches the flexibility to review game film, left weights, rehab injuries, study, unwind, and contemplate the road to their next championship.”

Ellerbe Becket is providing planning services, programming, architecture, interior design, construction observation and construction documents. Cost for the 63,000 sf facility is confidential.

An innovator since its founding in 1909, Ellerbe Becket is a leader in architecture, engineering, interiors and the construction industry, with office locations worldwide. The firm’s Kansas City sports practice is celebrating 20 years of operation in 2008.
