Ellerbe Becket Designers “Souper-Size” Efforts To Feed The Hungry

October 31st, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Designers from Ellerbe Becket’s Minneapolis office created a giant soup bowl made of canned goods and in the process helped collect 20,000 pounds of food for local relief agencies.

Ellerbe Becket employees participated in Canstruction, the most unique food charity event in the world. Sponsored by the Society for Design Administration, it’s a design/build competition held throughout North America in which teams of design professionals create structures made entirely from full cans of food.

Ellerbe Becket’s theme was “Souper-Sized: Feeding the World One Bowl at a Time.” Nearly 20 staff members came together to design a giant bowl of soup complete with crackers on the side.

“A bowl of soup provides comfort for the body and soul,” said Ellerbe Becket’s Erin Nielsen. Her colleague Greg Hamilton added, “Together we can share this with everyone in need around the world, one bowl at a time.” Nielsen and Hamilton appeared on the local Fox morning program over the weekend. The “Souper-Sized” bowl of soup won a Canstruction award for “Best Structural Ingenuity.” In all, five design teams collected 25,000 cans of food (approximately 20,000 pounds) for donation to Second Harvest.
