The design-build team is composed of SB Ballard Construction (Norfolk), Clark Nexsen Architecture/Engineering (Norfolk’041, Walter P. Moore Structural Engineering and Ellerbe Becket (Kansas City).
In addition to the new end zone building, the project includes a new playing surface, scoreboard, sound system and field enclosure. The end zone building houses 24 suites and 400 loge seats, as well as club lounge space. A new 727-space parking garage will be attached to the end zone building.
The project goal is to establish both a prominent entry point to campus and an active gathering place at the stadium's south end, according to Ellerbe Becket’s Design Director Jon Niemuth, AIA. “We made some very specific moves to create connections to campus and opportunities for interaction between fans and team members,” said Niemuth.
Twelve of the suites will have their own patio overlooking the plaza south of the complex, while the loge seating area includes an 8,000-sf patio on the second level. Another 7,500-sf enclosed terrace will look over the south end zone.
Work will begin later this year with completion date set for August 2009, in time for the debut of the new Monarch football program. The new building’s exterior materials create a harmony with the existing stadium that Niemuth says makes a modern statement appropriate for the resurrected Old Dominion football program. “The minimal detailing, simple arches and brick façade of the existing stadium are all featured on the lower portions of the parking garage and game day building, creating a continuous masonry base anchored to the original stadium architecture,” Niemuth said.
