Designed by Ellerbe Becket, the 31,000-sq.-ft. facility incorporates Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment that includes a virtual-reality-type trainer with eight cameras, a life-size 3-D screen, and a gait-lab with 23 cameras.
“People in our Washington, DC, office understood this was not going to be our normal masterpiece-type project,” says Ellerbe Becket Director of Government Services Tom Anglim. “Time and cost restraints demanded an emphasis on the functionality of the facility, not on aesthetics. We understood from the beginning the building honors those who come for treatment and rehabilitation. It was an honor for us to be part of this project.”
Superintendent Dearl Tate used cost-effective measures to ensure the project tracked within the given budget, mandated by Congress. Says Tate, “We all want to support our troops however possible, and this is the best way that Turner can give back. This building is going to make a difference in the lives of our service members.”
The MATC offers unprecedented medical care and services for amputees and functional, limb-loss patients. This facility provides modern rehabilitation equipment that will assist injured service members to return not only to duty, but to life. The MATC will provide a wide spectrum of outpatient rehabilitation programs through the combination of physical therapy/occupational therapy, sports programs, virtual reality systems, and sophisticated prosthetic components.
