NBA Finals: All Ellerbe, All The Time

June 6th, 2007

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – When the NBA Finals get underway here this week, the series will have a decidedly Ellerbe Becket flair! Both the Cleveland Cavaliers and the San Antonio Spurs play in Ellerbe Becket-designed buildings.

It’s the first time in history that one firm has designed both facilities represented in the NBA Finals. Counting this year, Ellerbe-designed buildings have hosted 10 NBA Finals since the modern sports facility boom began in the late 1980s.

The Cavs’ home, 20,000-seat Quicken Loans Arena (top), opened in 1994. It has been continually updated and enhanced to keep it among the nation’s elite multi-purpose venues. Ellerbe Becket currently is designing a new state-of-the-art Cavs practice facility.

AT&T Center (bottom) opened in 2002 and has hosted two previous NBA finals (2003 and 2005). The building was designed for both basketball and the famous San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo, seating 18,500 for basketball and 17,000 for rodeo.

Ellerbe Becket is one of the world’s leading sports architects, having designed or renovated 17 NBA/NHL arenas in the past two decades.

An innovator since its founding in 1909, Ellerbe Becket is a leader in architecture, engineering, interiors and the construction industry, with office locations worldwide.
