Association of College Unions International Honors Central Washington Project

March 28th, 2007

ATLANTA, Ga. – One of the most innovative new student unions and recreation centers in the Pacific Northwest received recognition from its peer institutions this week.

The Central Washington University Student Union and Recreation Center received a “Facility Design Award” at the Annual Conference of the Association of College Unions International (ACUI). The honor is based on aesthetic appearance, the overall design process and the positive impact the facility has on its campus.

Four of the key players involved in the Central Washington project participated in a March 26 ACUI panel discussion titled, “The Recreational Union.” Panel members included lead designer James Poulson of Ellerbe Becket; John Drinkwater, Senior Director of Campus Life at Central Washington; Steve Waldeck, Director of University Recreation at Central Washington; and Brian Hanlon, Vice President of Brailsford & Dunlavey.

The Central Washington Student Union and Rec Center opened in 2006.

Ellerbe Becket provided recreation facility consulting services, in association with Ambia. James Poulson, Ellerbe Becket design director, served as lead designer while with Ambia.

An innovator since its founding in 1909, Ellerbe Becket is a leader in architecture, engineering, interiors and the construction industry, with office locations worldwide.
