Sprint Center Design Wins AIA Kansas City Honor Award

November 28th, 2006

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sprint Center, the glistening jewel in the revitalization of downtown Kansas City, has received an Honor Award from the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The award was presented Nov. 10 to representatives of the Downtown Arena Design Team (DADT), a consortium of the world’s most prolific sports design firms, of which Ellerbe Becket is a member.

Sprint Center is one of six projects to earn the Honor Award from AIA Kansas City. The judging panel was particularly impressed with what the design team was able to accomplish in the face of a tight urban footprint.

Scheduled to open in Fall 2007, Sprint Center is transparent to allow views both into and out of the arena. The clear patterned glass materials, which construction crews currently are erecting, will catch and reflect light both day and night.

DADT is responsible for design and delivery of the 18,500-seat arena, which will accommodate basketball, ice hockey, arena football, concerts and family shows. It also is a major anchor for the new Power & Light Entertainment District and will be a striking icon on the transformed downtown landscape.

An innovator since its founding in 1909, Ellerbe Becket is a leader in architecture, interiors, engineering and the construction industry with office locations worldwide.
