New Medical Zone at Education City

DOHA, Qatar – The Qatar Foundation has selected the U.S. firm of Ellerbe Becket to serve as the Executive Architect of a premier academic medical center to be built in Doha. Provisionally known as the Specialty Teaching Hospital (STH), the center will be part of a new medical zone on the Education City campus.

The Specialty Teaching Hospital will be a state-of-the-art, all-digital medical center offering specialty care for women and children, as well as general medical services for male and female patients of all ages. It will encompass three essential missions – world-class clinical care, medical education, and biomedical research. Part of a collaborative effort entitled “one program in multiple institutions,” the STH will work closely with Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and Hamad Medical Corporation to promote excellence in all. As the most recent and most complex initiative to be launched by the Qatar Foundation, the STH represents the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al-Missned to enhance the quality of healthcare in Qatar and help build the nation's scientific expertise and resources.

Ellerbe Becket (EB) is an award-winning architectural firm and has done extensive work in the healthcare arena, including multiple buildings for the Mayo Clinic and the new sports medicine hospital in Doha’s Khalifa Sports City. Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects will serve as signature architect and will be responsible for the physical design of the STH building. Also on the team is global healthcare programming consulting firm Kurt Salmon Associates.

As the Executive Architect, EB will lead the team of architects, designers, engineers and other professionals in the detailed design of the STH and the medical zone.

Engineer Saad Al-Muhannadi, the Qatar Foundation’s Vice President for Capital Projects, is directing the construction of the STH. “We are pleased to have secured a top notch team of local and international talent for the design and construction of the Specialty Teaching Hospital,” he said. “The expertise of Ellerbe Becket and the creativity of Cesar Pelli will allow us to build a facility that is both unique and beautiful, and that fulfills the vision of Her Highness to establish a premier medical and research center in Qatar.“

The Qatar Foundation medical zone will include the medical center, residential accommodations for nurses and medical residents, a car park, and a pedestrian walkway to Weill Cornell Medical College. The STH is scheduled to open in late 2010.
