Zborowsky and Leow to speak at Healthcare Design Symposium

September 23rd, 2005

ATLANTA, Ga. – Ellerbe Becket’s Terri Zborowsky, MSc, and Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s Choy Leow, AIA, are presenters at the 18th Annual Symposium on Healthcare Design here Sept. 28.

Zborowsky, who is Ellerbe Becket’s Director of Healthcare Education and Research, and Leow, Director of Architecture for Abbott Northwestern, will present “A Vision for Design: The Creation of the Neuroscience/Orthopaedic/Spine Patient Care Center.”

The two will describe how a collaborative design process created a healing environment that is focused on patient-centered care and integrates Abbott Northwestern’s Healing Environment Aesthetic Standards. The new 128’bed facility was designed to provide comfort and privacy for patients and families, and a safe and efficient work environment for nurses and physicians. The unit incorporates the latest technology to aid in meeting patient and safety requirements, including hands-free nurse call, bedside charting, and a ceiling-mounted lift system.

About the Presenters
Zborowsky is a registered nurse who worked in an orthopedic/acute spinal cord injury unit at a large teaching hospital in Canada. Since then, she has focused her energy on design-oriented degrees at the University of Minnesota, where she is currently a PhD candidate. Terri has now become a seasoned interior designer and healthcare planner at Ellerbe Becket. In addition, Terri is responsible for leading Ellerbe Becket’s in-house healthcare education and research efforts; this initiative is currently focused on integrating that research into the design process.

Leow has 16 years of architectural experience with a variety of projects ranging from medical, recreational, governmental and educational. He joined Abbott Northwestern Hospital in March 2003 and has provided architectural, conceptual and visualization expertise for a range of facilities needs. Choy worked closely with Ellerbe Becket’s design team for the NOS PCC in planning and material/finish selections that reinforce the principles of fengshui.
