STANFORD, Calf. – The University of California, Davis pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the young football season here Sept. 17 with a stunning 20-17 victory over Stanford. Click here for post-game wrap-up.
It’s the first time in history that a non-Division I team has defeated Stanford in football. UC Davis is transitioning from Division II to Division I-AA and the Aggies will christen a new on-campus multi-use stadium in fall 2006. Noted sports architect Ellerbe Becket is designing the stadium as the home to Aggie football and women’s lacrosse.
The project’s first phase calls for 10,000 seats, with the option in later phases to expand to 30,000. UC Davis Director of Athletics Greg Warzecka says the stadium will enhance the university’s ability to hold a variety of sporting events. “Most importantly, we will be able to increase scheduling opportunities, increase our seating options and provide a facility that students will be proud of,” he said.
The Aggies have a rich athletic history (five-time winner of the coveted NACDA Directors’ Cup recognizing the most successful NCAA Division II collegiate athletics program in the country). The victory over Stanford ranks among the greatest – if not the greatest – athletic accomplishments in University history.
An innovator since its founding in 1909, Ellerbe Becket is a leader in architecture, engineering and the construction industry with office locations worldwide.
