Lambeau To Be Converted For College Hockey Game

June 10th, 2005

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Those wacky “cheese heads” have found a new use for their hallowed football grounds. Lambeau Field will be converted to an outdoor ice hockey stadium for the “Frozen Tundra Hockey Classic” in 2006.

The University of Wisconsin will play Ohio State Feb. 11, 2006. The game will serve as the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame (HOF) Benefit Game, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the HOF. Total seating of 38,000-40,000 is expected for the game, including indoor club seats and private boxes, compared to Lambeau’s 72,601 capacity for football.

The Green Bay Press Gazette notes that the event will the “third major outdoor hockey game in the last two-and-a-half years.” The Edmonton Oilers of the NHL hosted the Montreal Canadians in front of 57,000 at commonwealth Stadium in 2003 and the University of Michigan played at Michigan State’s Spartan Stadium in front of 74,000 in 2004.

The game will be the second non-football sporting event for Lambeau, which last February hosted snocross races.
