The awards program recognizes built projects in the Gulf States, Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Indian Subcontinent. A ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 20 in Dubai Media City.
Designed by the Ellerbe Becket/Omrania Consortium, the Kingdom Centre is a distinctive focal point on the Riyadh skyline. Prince Alwaleed, grandson of King Abdulaziz, the founder of Saudi Arabia, wanted the Kingdom Centre to be a globally recognized icon for Riyadh, just as the Eiffel Tower is for Paris. At 984 ft (300 meters), the Kingdome Centre is the same height as the Eiffel Tower.
The mixed-use tower accommodates several different facilities, including the Prince’s business headquarters, a first-class hotel, the three-story Kingdom Mall, a wedding and conference center, rent able office space, a sports club and luxury condominiums.
In 2003, Kingdom Centre was named the “World’s Best New Skyscraper” by skyscrapers.com . And the same year, the International Council of Shopping Centers honored Kingdom Centre with one of its International Design and Development Awards.
An innovator since its founding in 1909, Ellerbe Becket is a leader in architecture, engineering and the construction industry with office locations worldwide.
