UNLV to Renovate and Expand Student Union

March 16th, 2004

MINNEAPOLIS – The Moyer Student Union at the University of Nevada Las Vegas will double in size over the next three years as part of a $40 million expansion and renovation project.

The University has retained Ellerbe Becket and Tate Snyder Kimsey Architects of Las Vegas for renovation of 58,000 sf of current student union space as well as an 82,000-sf addition.

Tate Snyder Kimsey will take the lead on architectural design. Ellerbe Becket's Minneapolis office will be responsible for interior design and engineering for both phases of the project.

Phase one (the addition) will open in the Fall of 2006 and phase two (renovation of existing space) will be open by Fall 2007.

The Moyer Student Union was built in 1968 and named in honor of Dr. Donald C. Moyer, who served as Chancellor and President of the University from 1965 to 1968. When the building first opened, UNLV had 5,000 students. Today, the University has 23,000 students. UNLV student surveys have indicated that if the Union had more food service, retail and lounger space, a larger percentage of students would use the Union regularly.

The objective is to increase the amount of food service, entertainment options, meeting and conference rooms, social and study lounges and outside seating. Student fees will cover the cost of improvements.

Ellerbe Becket just completed restoration of the historic Coffman Union at the University of Minnesota in 2003. The renovation added many of the same features planned for the UNLV project, including branded food offerings and expanded social and meeting space.

An innovator since its founding in 1909, Ellerbe Becket Becket is a leader in architecture, engineering and the construction industry with office locations worldwide.
