Mad Cow Disease Rampant In Sports Design!

March 10th, 2004

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – We sat down with Jon Niemuth, AIA, NCARB, one of the brightest young designers in Ellerbe Becket’s sports practice, and asked him to weigh in on his own industry. Niemuth, who is lead designer on Memphis’ FedExForum and the just-completed Rentschler Field at the University of Connecticut, wasn’t shy:

“Mad Cow Disease Runs Rampant in the Sports Design Profession.”
There is much repetition within the industry (i.e. retro stadiums). The industry continues to fragment and many firms are left with suspect experience and credentials.

“Average Attendance at Sporting Events Will Quadruple in 10 Years.”
It won’t all be in-person attendance, but Internet connectivity and multiple remote cameras have the potential to allow fans to customize their viewing experience and allow for remote connectivity for fans that are unable to travel or view away games for their favorite teams. Hence, the increase in attendance – real and virtual.

“The Best Sports Buildings Will Never Exist.” Or, “Can a Building in a Constant State of Change Ever Really Exist?”
We’ll see stadiums and arenas that change with the team (outfield walls that move in or out easily, seat counts that expand or reduce depending on crowd size, flexible premium seating with the ability to change offerings) with minimal interruption in response to each event. We may even see the return of the multi-purpose stadium!
