The top 100 collected approximately $1.5 billion in fees in 2003, up 1.13 percent over 2002's fees. The magazine predicts an even larger rise – 5.5 percent – in 2004.
When broken out by building types, Ellerbe Becket placed in the top 10 in two important categories. The firm is ranked 10th in “Financial/Bank Design” and eighth in “Cultural Design. ” In the financial arena, the firm won commissions in 2003 with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and U.S. Bank in Minneapolis. The “Cultural Design” category includes sports facilities, for which the firm is world-renowned. In 2003, Ellerbe Becket interior designers worked on such projects as the Lambeau Field renovation in Green Bay, Wis., and the new Charlotte Arena in Charlotte, N.C.
The firm also does award-winning interior design work for health sciences, government and education facilities.
According to Interior Design magazine, “Office and retail design remain the top two earning categories, accounting for 29.59 percent and 12.67 percent of fees, respectively. The contribution that offices made to fees, however, went down almost 2 percent, while retail rose almost 1 percent. The big changes occurred in health care, which went up 32 percent (from fourth to third place), and financial institutions, which dropped 21.6 percent (from third to sixth place). The contribution made by educational facilities increased 13.8 percent. Residential declined 11.6 percent. ”
