Sefton joins a busy team of designers and project managers at work on sports and public assembly projects up and down the west coast, including a master plan for a performing arts center/city hall/library/children’s museum in San Ramon, Calif., the new University of California at Davis stadium and a new basketball arena for Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. He comes to San Francisco from Ellerbe Becket’s Kansas City office where he had been working in tandem with the San Francisco staff on projects such as Gonzaga and UC-Davis.
“Ellerbe Becket has an impressive sports resume on the west coast,” said Bill Crockett, managing principal in the firm’s San Francisco office. “Stephen’s collaboration skills and design sensitivity have allowed him to blend nicely into our projects here and solidify our position in the industry.” In recent years the firm has completed a host of major west coast projects: Seahawks Stadium in Seattle; the Rose Garden in Portland, renovation of Autzen Stadium at the University of Oregon; PGE Park in Portland; Haas Pavilion at the University of California at Berkeley; the Leavey Center at Santa Clara University; and renovations to the basketball and football facilities at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.
Sefton has more than seven years’ experience in sports and entertainment design. His resume includes stadiums, arenas, recreation and public assembly facilities. Prior to joining Ellerbe Becket, his project experience included the 1996 Centennial Olympic Stadium in Atlanta; Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium at the University of Louisville; and ALLTEL Arena in Little Rock, Ark.
He holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Fine Arts and a bachelor of architecture degree from Syracuse University. He also attended New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts.
He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Young Architects Forum and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
