Ellerbe Becket-designed Qwest Field drew a sellout crowd for the Manchester-United vs. Celtic soccer game July 22. The opening match of the four-game U.S. swing drew 66,000-plus and was the venue's biggest event to date in terms of fan and media interest. It was also one of the highest attended soccer matches held in the United States, second only to the Women’s World Cup final in 1999. Qwest Field opened last year to rave reviews for its innovative design and fan-friendly atmosphere. The venue is capable of hosting major events such as the Super Bowl, World Cup, concerts and the Olympics. The stadium has already won several awards, including Building Design & Construction’s 2003 “Building Team Project of the Year.”
