In 1868 the College of California and the Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College merged to form the University of California, moving to Berkeley in 1873. As the institution grew, it attracted distinguished faculty, funding and research grants. Berkeley faculty have been awarded Nobel Prizes for their discoveries and work in physics, chemistry, biology, literature and economics.
