Shriners Hospitals for Children, Expansion and Renovation

Chicago, Illinois, USA

As a pediatric orthopaedic hospital providing free care to patients in need, the design for the expansion and renovation needed to provide a comfortable environment for children of all ages, as well as a cost-effective solution to align with the organization’s mission.

The expansion's first phase included semi-private rooms ideal for school-age kids, family overnight rooms that allow parents to stay with their child, and separate play and socializing spaces for younger and older children.

Phase two features a therapy pool and an interactive play wall.

Children have unique healthcare needs from adults. The goal is to create a healing environment to meet children’s specific needs while they’re receiving care.
