Saint Paul Winter Carnival, Centennial Ice Palace

Saint Paul, Minnesota

Designed and built in honor of the centennial of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival, and awarded to Ellerbe via a statewide design competition, this 12-story castle was made of approximately 10,000 blocks of ice, 600 lbs. each.

A computerized lighting system allowed the soaring, fanciful structure to glow and change color through the night. The completed Ice Palace attracted international attention and more than a million visitors during its existence, February 5-20, 1986.

After the completion of the Winter Carnival, it was toppled by a wrecking ball.
