When Old Dominion University decided to resurrect its football program in 2006, the renovation of its stadium, Foreman Field, was only part of the challenge. The school also needed to consider training and support spaces. Thus, the first phase of bringing football back to campus was the construction of the Powhatan Sports Complex.
Designed by Ellerbe Becket in association with Clark Nexsen Architecture + Engineering, the facility plays an important role in the re-establishment of the football program while providing Old Dominion University with the preeminent NCAA field hockey and lacrosse competition facility in the country. In addition to locker rooms and training spaces serving current athletes and coaches, the complex features gathering space for alumni and recruits. This includes a hall of athletics, which displays the accomplishments of the University’s various athletics programs throughout the school’s history.
The design team did the unthinkable – they met & exceeded the expectation of both our Championship Women’s programs AND the Head Football Coach.
