- Ellerbe Becket/SOM Joint Venture: Planning, Architecture and Interior Design
Designed by a joint venture team of Ellerbe Becket and SOM, this is the first construction project in the Veterans Affairs Capital Asset Realignment Enhanced Services (CARES) program. It is a new seven-story, 200-bed tower addition (224,000 sf) and renovation (20,000 sf). This state-of-the-art medical facility contains both inpatient and ambulatory services.
The program consolidates area inpatient operations, accommodating the surgical suite, ICU, telemetry/step down unit, inpatient dialysis unit, acute care units, rehab medicine gym, and a 40-bed mental health / dementia unit, improving the delivery of healthcare services.
The bed addition on this tight urban site was carefully coordinated with two enhanced-use projects on the same site. The new building has been carefully zoned to help orient visitors, segregate visitor from patient/staff traffic, and to provide multiple connections between the buildings for the flow of patients and supplies.
