Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Military Advanced Training Center

Washington, D.C., USA

The Military Advanced Training Center (MATC) was constructed for the Baltimore District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in support of U.S. military personnel injured in combat and undergoing post-amputation therapy at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) Main Hospital.

The 31,000-square-foot project includes athletic facilities, indoor track, virtual environment labs, prosthetics, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling center, administrative offices, and medical record-keeping facilities.

This facility houses highly specialized equipment to help soldiers with missing limbs learn to use prosthetic devices, including:
• A gait lab that uses cameras to capture walking and running motion;
• An uneven terrain modeler that allows soldiers to learn to walk on a wide variety of surfaces;
• A firearms simulator and driving simulator.

Due to the critical need for the project, Turner Construction and Ellerbe Becket teamed to deliver the state-of-the-art center two months ahead of schedule and under budget. The center officially opened on September 13, 2007 to help soldiers with amputations returning from the war on terror.
