Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Comprehensive Cancer Center

Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA

This new Comprehensive Cancer Center incorporates approximately 254,000 square feet of radiation, medical and surgical oncology on four levels. The building includes diagnostic and exam rooms, patient treatment areas, radiosurgery and administration/staff areas, as well as radiosurgery, 4 linear accelerators, high density radiation treatment, a gamma knife, 32 chemotherapy infusion bays, 5 pherisis bays, PET/CT scanning, CT simulation, special procedure rooms, clinical services pharmacies, clinical trials center, and a cancer learning center. The building also includes a 60-space below grade parking garage to accommodate easy access to the center while offering a skyway connection to the patient tower of the Baptist Medical Center.

An initial goal for this program consolidation was to provide a warm and welcoming environment that reflects the state-of-the-art care being delivered within the new facility. Combining the high tech with a soft touch is never easy, and to this end, designers clad bold forms with warm materials, mixing strength with comfort and adding an abundance of natural light. In addition, an outdoor waterfall, a two-story high bamboo garden, meditation room and artwork throughout the facility promote a sense of well being and healing. All functional areas within the center are designed to allow easy access from the light-filled lobby, and to provide the staff with an efficient and flexible layout that can change over time.
